Application requirements - what you need to submit to us

An application to The American University of Paris requires several supporting documents and sometimes tests. Most requirements can be uploaded directly in your online application. We cannot provide you with a decision until we receive all of your documents.

Detailed information about all of these items is provided below.

Online application form

We offer students two options to apply to the University, both of them online: the AUP Application Portal and the Common Application. Choose only one. You may start either application without completing it in one sitting, but make sure to submit your application within the official application deadlines. There is a 50€ processing fee for the AUP Application or $50 for the Common Application.

Personal statements

We want to learn more about you as a person and as a student. So, we ask that you include a personal statement as part of your application. If you are completing the Common Application, use one of the essay prompts there, as well as the AUP supplementary essay (as of August 2014). If you are using the AUP Application Portal, you can upload your essay as part of your online application.

1. In approximately 500 words, in English, please answer one of the following essay questions:

  • Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
  • The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
  • Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
  • Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
  • Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

2. In addition to the essay above, in under 300 words, answer the following:

  • What attracts you the most about coming to The American University of Paris and how do you believe the experience of living and studying in Paris will change you?

Extracurricular activities & work experience

A summary of your extracurricular activities and employment history is a great way to share more information about yourself. It also helps us better understand your interests, experiences, and how you spend your time. Using the AUP Application Portal you may submit your list of activities and work experience in .pdf format. In the Common Application use the “Extracurricular Activities & Work Experience” section.

Two letters of recommendation from teachers or professors

We ask that you provide two letters of recommendation from teachers or professors with whom you have taken classes and who can tell us more about you and your academic potential. Online forms for your recommenders are provided in both the AUP Application Portal and Common Application (in the Common Application, first-year applicants use the “School Report” and the “Teacher Evaluation;” transfer applicants use two “Instructor Evaluations”).

Official transcripts from the past three years of schooling

In your application, please include transcripts from your last three years of schooling. Transcripts include your grades/marks and examination results (if applicable) through your most recently completed semester or grading period. If you are still in school, the transcript will obviously not include your current courses in progress.

These transcripts must be in English or French, or be accompanied by a certified translation. When you apply, you can submit unofficial transcripts online. If you’re admitted to AUP, you will need to before you are allowed to enroll and before we can consider you for advanced standing credit or transfer credit.

As a first-year student, examples of your last three years of schooling may be:

  • International Baccalaureate: your transcript of grades for the past three years and your expected IB examination results
  • United States: your high school transcript for grades 9-11 (and grade 12 if you have completed a term or semester by the time you apply)
  • France: your bulletins from seconde, première, et terminale (premier trimestre, for example)
  • Italy: your pagelle scolastiche from third, fourth, and fifth (first trimester, for example)
  • United Kingdom: your GCSE's or IGCE's. AS-levels, and A-levels or predicted A-level results you have received to date or University Foundation Program results

As a transfer student, submit transcripts for all college or university work undertaken. If you have completed fewer than 45 university semester credits, please also submit your secondary school transcript.
